We caught up with Raishma Islam as she visited India to design items and source materials for her new collection.
Raishma Islam trained under Elizabeth Emmanuel and is now the lead designer for the business carrying her own name, “Raishma“, which is one of the UK’s fastest growing fashion labels. Taking inspiration from cultures across the globe, Raishma’s ethnic-fusion designs are full of vitality, bold colours, patterns and glamour and have earned them a loyal clientele which includes Royalty, A-List celebrities and members of Parliament.
Raishma spent six days in India. Her eventful and busy schedule started in Delhi where she went from workshop to workshop, designing new pieces, sourcing and selecting new fabrics and working on new prints and embroidery techniques with her team of experts.
“For the new collection I want to add more variety to each product range. So, with this in mind, I worked on a new colour palette for 2014/15. I want to create different cuts and silhouettes long and short, still in keeping with our signature Raishma style.”
Whilst in Delhi, as well as visiting 7 workshops with whom she works, Raishma visited Satya Suman to see his new ideas. Satya is a St Martin’s graduate who has worked at the renowned fashion label Giorgio Armani, and Alexander McQueen. He has also worked with a number of celebrities including Madonna, Bjork, Gwen Stefani, Cate Blanchett and George Clooney. Satya is now a designer for Raishma and we are promised some really exciting designs as part of the new collection.
From Delhi, Raishma flew to Mumbai where she visited Lakme Fashion Week. With a set idea of what she wanted to achieve, she was able to attend a selection of fashion shows from designers such as Varun Bahl to LoveBirds in just 48 hours. After 48 hours at Lakme, Raishma spent her last day in Mumbai designing the new collection which includes a range of amazing designs from sarees to long tunics and trousers.
Raishma’s enthusiasm for Indian fashion is electric. Her passion for combining design with comfort governs all her designs. Islam told us: ‘Fashion is so important in shaping not only the way that others perceive us, but also the way we feel about ourselves. So often, women have to compromise, either opting for a great fit or a stylish design. All women deserve to feel confident, glamourous and gorgeous in their outfits.”
We can’t wait to see the new collection!
